Dual Certification
At Battle River Physiotherapy, it is core to our practice to know the latest science in Physical Medicine. Our senior Physiotherapist maintains licenses in both USA and Canada. Since the USA is at the hub of science innovation, Crystal and her staff travel to the American Physical Therapy Association’s yearly forum to learn about the current and upcoming therapies that can help our patients, right here in Central Alberta.
Have you heard about tVNS?
tVNS (or transcutaneous Vagus nerve stimulation) is a non-invasive technique that involves the application of electrical currents through surface electrodes at select locations, most commonly targeting the auricular branch of the vagus nerve on the external ear and the branch of the vagus nerve in the neck.
Their research is bearing fruit, and now the FDA has approved a noninvasive vagus nerve stimulation device for headaches in the USA. At Battle River Physiotherapy we use it for pain that is affecting the daily lives of our patients.
Persistent Pain?
Recovery is Possible!
Many have done it over the years, and do you know what they have attributed it to? When 400 people who had reported improvements in their chronic pain were asked how they managed it,
the most common answer was learning to approach the problem
differently and to retrain their pain system back to normal.
(Moseley et al., 2024)
So What is This Different Approach?
First Research has Consistently Shown That Understanding How Pain Works Helps REDUCE Pain.
(Cashin et al, 2023 , Moseley et al, 2024)
The sensation of pain is produced in the brain and is influenced by everything going on in our life, including your sleep, diet, relationships, work, stress,
politics and more. As you deepen your understanding of your pain
and what is influencing it, you can have more power to help
reduce it.
Second, motion is lotion!
Getting movement, and the right amount of it, is key to recovery. Too much might set you over the edge right now but not enough
can also be detrimental.
Third, persistence! Our brain and bodies are always changing. This change is
not instantaneous, but, with persistence, you can harness this
change to move you towards recovery.
When you come for physiotherapy for your persistent
pain, we not only do a mechanical assessment of the area that is in pain, but also explore other factors that may be influencing your pain. Then, we incorporate pain education, graded movement, and other
strategies to help retrain your pain system and move
you towards meeting your goals. Remember- your
brain and body are always changing, so let’s use that change to get you back
to doing the things you love!
